Classical Mythology
Iphigenie is the daughter of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra. She was about to be sacrificed in order to ensure a wind to take the Greek ships to Troy. But she was saved by Artemis, who set her up as a priestess. She is an exemplary figure of dignity and self-respect for women in the ancient world: she puts her duty before her own wishes.
In the movie The Killing of a Sacred Deer starring Nicole Kidman and Colin Farrell, the myth is revisited. It is the story of a surgeon whose family is haunted by the death of one of his patients. The wife of the patient, played by Michelle Williams, is like Iphigenie: she put her duty before her own wishes and feelings.
